18 September 1999 PENDING DEMOLITION!!! Leif Harmsen Yes, The Royal Vauxhall Tavern is open for the time being, but what doest the future hold? DEMOLITION! Lambeth Council have given 1-2 years until the Tavern is knocked down to build a £300m retail and leisure complex. The Royal Vauxhall Tavern, built in 1863, has been a gay pub for more than 50 years. It has survived 2 world wars, the criminalisation of homosexuality, the decriminalisation of homosexuality, and the Soho pink pound explosion. Our history must not be destroyed!   2014 Addendum:  The RVT was obviously not demolished in the end and is still going strong .  I think I recall that the retail project couldn't raise enough money for itself.   Once gain, the RVT squeaked by!
